About 10 people were buried under an avalanche on Sunday in the Lech/Zurs ski area in the western Austrian state of Vorarlberg, the Austrian Press Agency (APA) said, adding that one person had been rescued, Reuters reported.
The avalanche came down around 3:00 p.m. (14:00 GMT), APA reported, adding that several helicopters and search teams were deployed soon after.
“We are doing everything possible to save winter sports enthusiasts,” said the Leh municipality, according to APA.
About 100 people are involved in the search.
Information about the victims was not provided.
Rescue teams warned this weekend of a high avalanche danger in the area, as well as in neighboring Tyrol, underscoring the fragility of the snowpack amid little warming.
In recent years, avalanches in Austria have caused an average of more than 20 deaths per year, writes AFP, cited by Agerpres.
