Fabio Capello gave an interview in which he touched on many sensitive football topics. The former coach talked about today’s possession game, about the situation with Cristiano Ronaldo, but he also mentioned Florin Reducha.
Cristiano Ronaldo, a burden for any team
For Corriere della Sera, Capello agreed to discuss the current topics of world football.
Former successful AC Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus coach Capello has described Cristiano Ronaldo as a burden for any team these days.
“Cristiano Ronaldo has done this to himself and it’s a shame, especially when you look at what he’s achieved in his career. As a player, no doubt about it, but he was arrogant.
He offered himself everywhere without finding a band that would believe in him. He became a burden for any team” – Fabio Capello.
Even Capello would not introduce Benzema in the final of the 2022 World Cup – Previous Florin Raduchu
When asked about Karim Benzema’s case (though he was fit, he was not used by Didier Deschamps in the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina), Capello said he would have done the same if he were France coach.
In support of his claims, Capello mentions the 1993 Intercontinental Cup final (lost by Milan 3-2 against Sao Paulo).
Savicevic then told his coach on the morning of the match that he was physically fit. Capello decided not to use him because the entire game was prepared with Florin Reduchuja as the starter.
“The morning before the match, he told me that he was ready to play, after I had prepared everything with Reduca in the starting line-up. Out of respect for the team, I didn’t let him play. I think it was the right decision. But the question remains: would Milan and France have won another trophy with Savicevic and Benzema on the pitch? Maybe, and” – Fabio Capello.
Possession play is the death of football
Capello has an interesting point of view when it comes to the possession game that is in vogue these days. The former Italian technician considers such tactics “the death of football”.
“I heard and saw many systems of the game, but they all used the same one: 9-1, which forced teams to defend as one and attack with many players. It is useless to invent something else.
Possession is the death of football, absolutely boring. Those who constantly pass the ball are not responsible, and in fact verticalization requires courage” – Fabio Capello.
Is Messi the best player of all time?
Capello also touched on the subject of football’s GOAT. Did Messi surpass the legendary Maradona?
“From my point of view, Messi and Maradona were on the same level even before the World Cup (before Lionel and his teammates won the trophy). Pele, Messi and Maradona always did what others could not even imagine,” he concluded Capello.
