A pro-Moscow official blamed Ukrainian forces for the attack on Kherson, trying to blame the Russian military, Reuters reports.
Authorities said a Russian attack on the recently recaptured Ukrainian city of Kherson killed at least 10 people, wounded 58 and left bloodied bodies on the road, which Kyiv condemned as a senseless crime of pleasure.
Russia controls most, but not all, of the Kherson region. Kyiv-appointed local governor Yaroslav Yanushevich said on national television that the death toll had risen to 10, reports the Interfax Ukraine news agency, citing Reuters.
Volodymyr Saldo, the Russian-appointed governor of the region, said Kyiv had ordered its troops to bomb the city.
“This is a disgusting provocation with the obvious aim of blaming the Russian armed forces,” Saldp wrote on Telegram.
The deputy chairman of the regional council, Yuriy Sobolevskyi, said that the rocket fell near the supermarket on Svobody Square in the city.
Reuters could not independently verify the information from Kherson.
Ukraine recaptured the city, Russia’s only regional capital, after the February 24 invasion in November. Since then, according to Kyiv, Russian troops have been intensively shelling the city across the Dnipro River.
Accusations of Kyiv
Advisor to the President of Ukraine Kyrylo Tymoshenko said that the shelling was carried out from the Grad rocket salvo system.
Another lawmaker, Mykhailo Podolyak, criticized those calling for Kyiv to negotiate peace with Russia, citing Moscow’s relentless crackdown on Ukraine’s electricity grid since October, which has left millions without heat and water.
According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Kyiv was still recovering from Monday’s wave of rocket attacks, which knocked out half of the city’s electricity supply the next day.
