
Spyros Galinos, mayor of Lesbos between 2014-2019, passed away today at the age of 70 at Mytilini Hospital, where he had been hospitalized for the last few days after a long battle with cancer.
Spyros Galinos was born in Athens in March 1952 and grew up in Mytilini. He developed a rich sporting activity as a swimmer and polo player at the Mytilini Naval Club (NOM).
In 1990, 1994 and 1998 he was elected municipal councilor of Mytilene. In 2002, he was elected prefectural councilor, taking over the duties of vice prefect of Lesvos.
In 2009, he was elected MP for Lesbos, Lemnos and Ai Stratis for the New Democracy Party.
In June 2013, he was elected General Secretary of Independent Greece. As part of his candidacy for the post of mayor of the municipality of Lesvos, he resigned from his position. In May 2014, he was elected mayor of Lesvos.
Spyros Galinos was the son of the hero of the National Resistance and for a number of years was the deputy of the prefecture of Lesvos Mimi Galinos. He was married to Eleni Galetaki, with whom they had two sons.
