The prefect of the capital, Toni Greble, said on Friday after a new accident in Pasajul Unirii, which left one person dead, that he did not know why there were so many accidents in this busy place in the center of Bucharest, but he assured the traffic authorities that additional and pre-signal the gate complies with the rules.

Toni Greble said he knew there had been five accidents on Passaj Unirii since the extensive rehabilitation work, but he did not know the number before the upgrade.

When asked by journalists why there are so many accidents on the passage in the 4th sector, the Prefect of the capital replied that he could not explain it.

“For me, this is a question mark, not only today, but also regarding previous events. From the moment of the first incidents, all measures were taken, consultations were held with all specialists, the height of this alarm was checked, another alarm was installed, which was 40-50 meters higher, which is a lighter material, and I do not know why the coach did not stop at the first pre-signal , because the first one is even shorter in height. They are installed precisely to warn drivers so that they do not get into more serious things,” said Tony Greble.

The prefect of the capital clarified that all traffic lights comply with all the rules.

The works on Pasaj Unirii fully comply with the current legislation and recommendations of experts, the City Hall of Sector 4 reported on November 22.

This is the conclusion of the current inspection conducted from 11/16/2022 to 11/22/22 by specialists of the State Building Inspection (DSK) on Proezd Union, based on the results of road accidents that occurred two months after the restoration, after the work was completed in a safe condition, according to local authorities.

New height limit markings

In November, the Sector 4 City Hall installed new signage at the entrance to Pasajul Unirii, recently renovated, to alert drivers not to exceed the maximum permitted height of 3.5 meters. The measure comes after several buses have been stuck since the opening because they did not adhere to the height restriction.

The new limiters are equipped with pointers indicating that the maximum permissible height has been passed, and the cross bar of the new gate is equipped with a number of warning elements in the form of a “metal curtain”.

All these means of preliminary signaling, approved, moreover, by the Technical Commission for the circulation of the capital, were installed after the incidents that took place in the Unirii passage, within two months of its restoration, after the completion of the installation work. in safety

Several accidents on Passaj Unirii

Since the re-opening of Pasaj Unirii in early September, five large vehicles have been stuck either at the track gate or in the road tunnel.

On September 8, Pasaj Unirii, recently restored by the Sector 4 City Hall, was blocked by a TIR that hit the height limiter.

Then, on September 21, a truck got stuck in Pasajul Unirii in Bucharest, after the driver ignored the height limiter and drove through a tunnel, causing damage to the ceiling.

On Friday in Pasaj Unirii in the capital there was a new accident involving a bus carrying almost 50 Greek tourists and which ran into a height limiter. Four people were injured, rescue teams had to intervene. Traffic is completely blocked in the area, with critical ambulance and ISU teams on the scene.
