Belgian justice on Thursday decided to detain the Greek member of the European Parliament, Eva Kyli, who is accused this month of a corruption investigation involving Qatar, which already cost her the position of vice president of the European Parliament, reports AFP.

The Brussels chamber, before which the Socialist MEP appeared 11 days after her detention began, refused a request to be monitored by an electronic bracelet and “extended her preventive detention for one month”, the federal prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

Lawyers have 24 hours to appeal the decision, the prosecutor’s office said.

Kylie denies any wrongdoing, her attorneys said Thursday morning. She hoped to be released under supervision, arguing that she was “actively involved” in the investigation and was not a flight risk.

Eva Kylie is one of four suspects jailed on charges of “membership of a criminal organisation”, “money laundering” and “corruption” in a scandal that has rocked the European Parliament and raised tensions between Qatar and the EU.

Francesco Giorgi, Eva’s landlord, and former MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, who are also key figures in the case, were already detained on December 14.

Georgie, a 35-year-old parliamentary assistant and father to a 2-year-old daughter with Kylie, 44, pleaded guilty to police and an investigating judge during questioning by Belgian authorities in the scandal that erupted last Friday.

Eva admitted to the Belgian judge who heard the case that she told her father to take a large sum of cash out of the house, reports EFE. By the way, in Brussels, “suitcases with banknotes passed through the apartment” of former Italian MEP Pier Antonio Panzeri, the alleged organizer of the operation.
