Mexico’s president can’t seem to decide which speech to choose: just days after he condemned the assassination of a prominent journalist, he is vilifying him and the media for protecting certain interest groups.

During a press conference earlier this week, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador described some journalists he called “spokesmen for conservatism,” including TV and radio host Ciro Gomez Leyva, who recently escaped a gun attack, Reuters reported. “Now they are making sacrifices. (But) they are the elite, the most select media,” he said, explaining that some journalists are paid good money to protect the reputation of important groups.
