Taliban-run Afghanistan’s Ministry of Higher Education said on Tuesday that female students would not be allowed to enter the country’s universities until further notice, Reuters reported.

In a letter confirmed by a spokesman for the ministry of higher education, public and private universities in Afghanistan were ordered to immediately suspend access to female students in accordance with the cabinet’s decision.

This new Taliban restriction on women’s education is likely to raise concerns among the international community, which has not officially recognized the administration.

Foreign governments, including the United States, have said they need to change policies on women’s education before they can consider formally recognizing the Taliban-led administration, which is also subject to sanctions.

The decision came after authorities banned girls from middle and high school in March.
