Study: Greek dissonance in Europe

We … with a man. Again Greeks at odds with the general climate in Europe, unwilling to express their approval of the support provided by the European Union Ukraine after invasion of Russia. On the related issue of the parliamentary Eurobarometer for autumn 2022 in the 24 Member States, the majority of citizens approve of the position taken by the EU, with the exception of Slovakia, Bulgaria and Greece, which recorded the lowest percentage (49%, 48%). % and 48% respectively). The highest levels are recorded in Sweden (97%), Finland (95%), the Netherlands (93%), Portugal (92%) and Denmark (92%).

According to the same poll, three-quarters of European citizens (73%) agree with specific measures taken by the EU, i.e. sanctions against the Russian government, as well as economic, military and humanitarian support for Ukraine. Again, Greece is at the lowest place in the rankings, with only 46%. Six countries (Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Denmark, Ireland and Portugal) agree with more than 90%. Behind this stance lies courage, as 65% of European citizens believe that the war in Ukraine will affect their lives, which is 4 percentage points higher than in the Eurobarometer for April-May 2022.

In the Eurobarometer poll, Greece ranked last in the EU.

This attitude is consistent with the fact that democracy (36%), human rights (29%) and freedom of speech (28%) are values for Europeans that the European Parliament must protect as a matter of priority. The Greeks also identified democracy as a top priority. Greece also has one of the highest percentages (30%) of citizens who believe their country did not benefit from EU membership. As a rule, European citizens believe that their countries have benefited from membership in the European Union. In particular, 72% of Europeans say their country has benefited as an EU Member State, highlighting the contribution of the EU. in maintaining peace and strengthening security (36%, which is 6 percentage points higher than the corresponding indicator in 2021). It is no coincidence that the largest increase in this percentage is recorded by Latvia (+16 points), Lithuania (+15 points), Estonia (+2 points), the Netherlands (+13 points), Malta (+11 points) and Poland (+11 points). In addition to security and peace issues, Europeans highlight cooperation between member states (35%), the contribution of the EU. in the economic development of their country (30%), in the fact that it gives its citizens the strongest voting rights in the world (23%), etc.

“Pain and Calamity”

“The Russian attack caused terrible human suffering and massive destruction,” European Parliament President Roberta Metzola said, referring to the results of the investigation. “Ukrainians are demonstrating impressive courage and resilience in the face of the horrors of war. The best response and support we, as the European Union, can offer is European solidarity and European unity. The Ukrainian people can be sure that the European Parliament will continue to stand by their side and support them.”
