The commission investigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 unanimously recommended on Monday that former President Donald Trump be prosecuted, including for inciting insurrection, reports AFP.

The investigative commission also recommended bringing the former president to criminal liability for obstructing an official procedure (certifying the results of the presidential election), conspiracy against the US state, and making false statements.

The request is not mandatory, but it could increase pressure on prosecutors, who are conducting multiple investigations into Trump, to act.

Former President Donald Trump has proven he is “unfit” for a new public office, Liz Cheney, vice chairwoman of the House Select Committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, said Monday.

“Anyone who behaves like this at this moment will never again be able to hold a position of power in this country,” she said during the latest public hearing to present the findings of the commission of inquiry.

The commission spent 18 months investigating an unprecedented attempt to thwart a peaceful transfer of power by thousands of Trump supporters, inspired by his false claims that his 2020 election loss to Democratic President Joe Biden was the result of widespread fraud.

“If we want to survive as a nation of laws and democracy, this can never happen again,” said Benny Thompson, chairman of the Commission of Inquiry, according to Reuters.

While condemning Trump for calling crowds to the Capitol nearly two years ago, Thompson also criticized the former president for undermining faith in the democratic system.

“If faith is broken, so is our democracy. Donald Trump has broken that faith,” Thompson said.

Trump has already launched a campaign to try to get him re-nominated by the Republicans to run for the White House in 2024.

During the storming of the Capitol or shortly after it, five people were killed, including a police officer, and more than 140 police officers were injured. Millions of dollars in damage were done to the Capitol.

Trump has dismissed the numerous investigations he faces as politically motivated. He says the Democratic-dominated committee is biased.
