The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, who is on a two-day visit to Romania, will speak on Monday evening in the Romanian Parliament.

The meeting of the joint plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate began at 18.10.

In the afternoon, Metzola was received in Kotrochen by Klaus Iohannis.

Romania belongs to the Schengen area and there is no reason to reject its accession to Schengen, and the European Parliament will insist that it happens in 2023, Roberta Metzola said at a press conference held together with Klaus Iohannis.

At the same time, the head of state noted that this topic will not be on the agenda of the European Council in February, but will be discussed at the JAI Council, the first meeting of which will be held in March.

• “I want to be very clear: Romania belongs to the Schengen area and we will continue to push this issue forward, despite the delays and the disappointment that it did not happen in 2022.
• I also spoke last week at the European Council and called on all the leaders of the governments of the European Union to fulfill the promises made to this country 11 years ago. There is simply no valid reason not to welcome Romania and Bulgaria into the Schengen area.
• All conditions for membership have been met.
• Then this issue must be resolved and we must go ahead and insist that this issue be resolved in 2023,” said the EP chairman.
