What British military experts say in Sunday morning rating:

  • The Ministry of Defense of Russia has announced the creation of two “frontline creative brigades”, the task of which is to raise the morale of troops participating in a “special military operation”. Russian media reports that opera singers, actors and circus performers will be among them.
  • The new initiative follows a recent campaign by the Russian Ministry of Defense to encourage the public to donate musical instruments to the military.
  • Military music and organized entertainment for troops mobilized to the front have a long history in many armies, but in Russia they are closely associated with the concept of ideological political education of the Soviet era.
  • Low morale almost certainly continues to be a significant vulnerability for much of Russia’s military.
  • However, the soldiers’ concerns centered primarily on the very high casualty rate, the poor quality of commanders, pay problems, the lack of equipment and ammunition, and the need for clarity about the war’s objectives.
  • It is unlikely that the efforts of creative teams will significantly remove these fears.
