“After 20 years in the UN system, I feel it is time to work in a different way, interacting directly with refugees and local organizations,” the actress explained in a statement released by UNHCR on Friday.

“Angelina Jolie has been an important humanitarian partner of UNHCR for a very long time. We are grateful for his decades of service, his dedication and what he has done for refugees and displaced persons,” said UNHCR Director Filippo Grandi.

Angelina Jolie, one of Hollywood’s most iconic personalities, has undertaken more than 60 field missions over the years, drawing attention to refugees with her presence during these trips.

She recently visited Yemen and Burkina Faso with UNHCR to meet with displaced people who are experiencing “two of the most underfunded and underreported emergencies,” the statement said.

She also made a humanitarian visit to Ukraine in April, where she can be seen in a video posted on social media smiling and waving to fans at a cafe in Lviv, the country’s largest western city.

In October, she announced that she was preparing a return to films after several years in which she took on roles sporadically.
