Yesterday a contract was signed between STOP and Spanish Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles (CAF SA) to modernize 14 trains of the 8th reception, which were commissioned in 1983-1985, with the aim of operating them for another 25 years. The trains are expected to be delivered in installments, with the first to be delivered in 19 months, another 4 in 25 months, another 5 in 30 months and the remaining 4 in 34 months.
According to the relevant announcement, it is planned to replace old and energy-intensive DC traction motors with modern AC motors, replace the traction system, rotating generator, air compressors and pneumatic system. It is also planned to upgrade the air conditioning system and amenities for passengers with disabilities, as well as upgrading the seats and lighting. According to STASY’s sources, the 14-train modernization project is expected to take place in Greece, with the Spanish company reportedly cooperating with the Greek company to implement the project. With the completion of the project, the task is to reduce the time distances of line 1 of the power line and bring them into line with lines 2, 3 (crossing frequency 4-5 minutes).
Interventions worth 2 million euros are also planned for Line 1 stations.
It is noted that the final contractual price for the implementation of the project amounted to 65.5 million euros without VAT, while the contract received a green light from the Accounts Chamber. The project is funded by the NSRF. In addition to the modernization of 14 trains, in the next period, activities worth 2 million euros have been launched through tender procedures for the overall modernization of the stations of line 1. Among them, the reconstruction of the fence along line 1 with a budget of 761,000 euros, with a corresponding tender already in the air, replacement of existing lamps on LED-type lamps for better lighting and energy saving, anti-slip protection of stations, budget 154,250 euros, etc.
At the same time, it is planned to strengthen control over tariffs throughout the network in order to reduce ticket evasion, and a tender will be announced in the near future for the installation of an energy recovery system due to train braking. STASY’s sources remind that work on Elektrikos has been carried out since 2004, when all the stations were repaired in connection with the Olympic Games.
