A forest fire that broke out on November 30 in Tierra del Fuego in southern Argentina is still burning and has already covered 7,000 hectares, AFP reported on Tuesday.
The main goal is inside the Natural Reserve of Corazon de la Isla, an uninhabited green lung located 3,000 km south of Buenos Aires, with native tree species over 40 meters high.
“This is a very complex fire, in a difficult-to-access area where the wind is constantly changing. 7,000 hectares have been affected,” said Gustavo Meleglia, governor of the Tierra del Fuego province, during a press conference.
About 85 firefighters are fighting the fire with the help of two helicopters and three water cannons. No casualties have been reported.
Authorities are coordinating the installation of snow guards to prevent the flames from moving toward residential areas, but “with the wind, the fire is beating them,” Melella explained.
A dry summer in the south and strong and gusty winds in the country’s southernmost province make it difficult for firefighters. Weather conditions are not expected to improve in the coming days.
