Russia appears to be forced to use obsolete bombs as its ammunition stockpile dwindles after more than nine months of war in Ukraine, a senior US military official said on Monday, AFP and Agerpres reported.

Moscow’s current stockpile of ammunition is “rapidly depleting” and could run out by early 2023 if Russian forces continue to bomb Ukraine at their current rate, a US military official told reporters on condition of anonymity.

“It probably encourages them to use bombs that we would consider expired,” he added. “In other words, we load the bomb and hold our fists in the hope that it will fly or explode on landing.”

Last month, the US defense secretary cited ammunition stockpile problems facing Russian forces, which he blamed on Moscow’s logistical problems and strikes by Ukrainian forces on Russian ammunition depots.
