The city of Odesa in southern Ukraine was left almost completely without electricity after a kamikaze drone attack launched by Russians overnight, Ukrainian authorities said Saturday, citing AFP.

“For the time being, the city is without power,” said Kyrylo Tymoshenko, adviser to the President of Ukraine, in his Telegram account.

However, the main infrastructure facilities, in particular hospitals and maternity homes, have access to electricity, he clarified. “The situation remains difficult, but under control,” Tymoshenko said.

According to the governor of Odesa region Maksym Marshenka, Russia attacked the city with “kamikaze drones” on the night from Friday to Saturday. “Due to the strikes, there is no electricity in almost all districts and communities of our region,” he said.

Two drones were shot down by Ukrainian air defense units, Marchenko also reported, writes Agerpres with reference to AFP.

Kyiv said on Friday that regions in the country’s war-torn south, including Odesa, were suffering the worst power outages in days following the latest series of Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid.

On Monday, Russia fired dozens of cruise missiles at key infrastructure, putting further pressure on Ukraine’s network, which is already struggling after repeated attacks.

Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed on Thursday that the Russian military would continue to strike Ukraine’s energy grid, despite sharp Western criticism of the systematic attacks that have plunged millions into cold and darkness.

The port of Odesa on the Black Sea was a favorite vacation spot for many Ukrainians and Russians before the start of the Russian offensive on Ukraine on February 24.
