The first 15 new trams from a batch of 100 purchased by the capital city from Astra Arad were put into service on Saturday on line 41. The trams currently operating in Bucharest were manufactured during the communist period and have been improved over time.

32 trams run on line 41 during the week, 15 of them are new. Since June, when the first tram from Astra Arad arrived, STB has trained 91 operators to operate the new tram model.

In order to prevent acts of vandalism and encourage fare payment, each tram will have a separate controller responsible for information and monitoring throughout the day.

What amenities do the new trams offer, according to STB:

  • Next-generation validators are installed near each door of the trams to pay the fare with both bank cards and NFC smart devices.
  • The trams are equipped with an HVAC system for air conditioning and heating, which will allow automatic temperature regulation without the need to open the exterior windows in any season
  • The trams are equipped with USB connectors for powering mobile devices and are equipped with audio-video information systems visible from anywhere in the cabin, including free Wi-Fi.
  • Improved accessibility thanks to the fully lowered floor and 5 double doors
  • Much less energy consumption compared to trams in operation. Thus, the specific energy consumption is only half of the consumption of the V3A car, correspondingly only a third of the cost of the Tatra tram
  • From an operational point of view, the use of new traction systems reduces periods of immobilization for periodic major repairs, and also reduces the time required for emergency repairs.
  • Reduced travel time and improved ride quality thanks to modern traction systems based on AC motors with traction inverters
  • Tram drivers can use a spacious cabin equipped with air conditioning, video cameras with a view inside and outside the tram and an information system that provides information about the operating status of all systems that contribute to the safety and smooth operation of the tram.
