French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent statements regarding the provision of “security guarantees” to Russia were “taken out” of “context”, the Elysee Palace assured on Friday ahead of the organization of a new Conference on Aid to Ukraine on Tuesday in Paris, reports AFP, reports News.ro .
“The dialogue between the President of the Republic (French Emmanuel Macron) and the Ukrainian President (Volodymyr Zelenskyi) is excellent,” the French presidency assures.
“There is a gap between certain movements or certain people who seek to take the end of a sentence out of context and the reality of our work, which is done without difficulty,” the Elysée Palace emphasizes.
The French president in early December, referring to the security architecture that needs to be rebuilt in Europe, stressed that it is also necessary to offer “guarantees” to Russia in order to achieve a balance.
This security architecture, built by the United States and the USSR, and then by Russia, has faltered for many years.
France insists on the need for Europeans to come to the negotiating table when negotiating new arms control agreements.
“One of the essential points is the fear of NATO reaching its (Russian) gates, deploying weapons that can threaten Russia,” Macron explained, referring to repeated statements by Moscow 30 years after the collapse of the USSR.
A wave of indignation in Eastern Europe
Several Ukrainian figures and Eastern European leaders expressed some irritation, if not outright opposition, to Macron’s statements.
The French head of state “is only describing what Ukrainians want,” the Elysee Palace explained on Friday.
“Ukrainians themselves, obviously, want to be the first to get out of this war and that, finally, at the end of the war, negotiations should take place,” the French presidency emphasizes.
The Conference “Resistance and Reconstruction of Ukraine” is to be held in Paris, which aims to “present both the needs of Ukraine to ensure its economic resistance during the war and its reconstruction in the medium term, and to promote the mobilization of French economic entities in these two essential interests”, – reports the French Ministry of Economy.
“We talk every day, sometimes several times a day, to prepare this Conference. There are no difficulties,” the Elysee Palace assures.
