US President Joe Biden hailed the decision as “an important step to ensure the right of Americans to marry the person they love.”

Gay and lesbian unions have been guaranteed by the US Supreme Court since 2015. But after the Supreme Court’s historic abortion decision last June, many progressives fear that right will be overturned as well.

The temple of law already seems ready to allow some American companies to refuse to serve same-sex couples in the name of freedom of speech. She can make a decision in this direction already this summer.

Most Americans support

The vast majority of Americans support same-sex marriage, including Republicans. But the religious right is overwhelmingly opposed.

Specifically, the law passed Tuesday in the US Congress repeals previous laws that defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman.

All Democrats and 39 Republicans passed the bill. 169 members of the Grand Old Party spoke against it.

“I think it’s the wrong way to go,” said Republican Jim Jordan, a close associate of former President Donald Trump.

The bill, known as the Respect for Marriage Act, passed the Senate last week.
