This new package of sanctions, the ninth, also targets the Russian armed forces and three others. of Russian banks, reports AFP.
“Eight packages of sanctions adopted today are already damaging (Russia). But today we are increasing the pressure” on Moscow in response to the war in Ukraine, said Ursula von der Leyen.
However, this new package of measures proposed by the European Commission must be discussed and unanimously approved by the 27 EU member states.
The head of the European Commission suggested adding “the Russian armed forces, as well as officers, as well as enterprises of the Russian defense industry” to the list of persons and organizations against which the EU has imposed sanctions.
The list also included “deputies of the State Duma and the Federation Council of the Russian Federation, ministers, governors and political parties.” According to Ursula von der Leyen, these are the people who played a key role in “Russian missile attacks”, in “abduction of Ukrainian children to Russia” or in “theft of Ukrainian agricultural products”.
Brussels is also proposing sanctions against three new Russian banks, including a blanket ban on the operations of the Russian Regional Development Bank, to “further paralyze the financial machine” of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to Ursula von der Leyen, the proposed sanctions against the military and the military industry are aimed at strengthening restrictions on the purchase of dual-use goods, civil and military, as well as electronic and IT components, chemicals and neurotoxic substances.
