Netflix’s new series “Wednesday,” filmed in Romania, has drawn criticism on social media after Jenna Ortega, the actress who plays the lead role of Wednesday Addams, revealed that she filmed the iconic scene while suffering from COVID-19.

During an interview with NME magazine, Ortega revealed that she choreographed the dance in episode 4 herself Wednesdayit went viral after the series aired on November 23.

“I’m not a dancer, and I’m sure that’s obvious. I got the song [„Goo Goo Muck” a trupei The Cramps] a week before filming and I was improvising as much as I could (…) It was crazy because it was my first day with COVID and it was terrifying to shoot,” she said.

“I woke up and it was weird, I never get sick and when I do it’s not too bad but I was having cramps all over my body. It felt like I had been hit by a car and a little goblin was flying around my throat and scratching the walls of my esophagus,” Ortega continued.

She also shared that she started taking medication between shoots until she tested positive for Covid.

“We asked to reshoot the scene, but we didn’t have time. I think I could have done it a little better,” the American actress explained.

The producers of the Netflix series shot in Romania reject the criticism

MGM, the studio that actually handled the production, later said that “strict COVID protocols were followed after the positive test was confirmed” and that Jenna was removed from the set.

But that didn’t stop some netizens from expressing their outrage at the situation.

“It’s bad, isn’t it? We all agree that this wasn’t a “persevere through adversity” moment, it was why the hell didn’t she go home, she could have gotten terribly sick and infected others (…) She should have been self-isolating while she waited for the test results . tim burton’s artistic vision does not justify dead people,” said a comment on Twitter, which has more than 100,000 likes.

“Yes, it is very bad. It was dangerous, immoral and extremely selfish on her part, as well as on the part of the directors and producers. There is no positive way to present the fact that an actress knowingly exposed hundreds of crew members to COVID-19,” another said.

“Wednesday” had a smashing debut on Netflix

However, many commentators came to the defense of the actress, with some of them concluding that Ortega was probably forced to act in this scene due to the series’ tight filming schedule.

“It wasn’t even one shot, it was a whole scene in a dance club with a bunch of people. I don’t blame Jenna for reporting them [pe producători] in advance, but I think it was extremely irresponsible of them to continue filming because they took on so many people,” another Reddit user noted.

Ortega’s interview with NME came out a little over a week later Wednesday became the most popular English-language series on Netflix immediately after its release.

The eight-episode series amassed 341.2 million hours of viewing worldwide in the first week of its November 23 premiere, breaking the show’s Season 4 record of 335 hours. Other people’s things.

South Korean series Squid game however, holds the record with an all-time record of 571.76 million hours watched in one week after becoming a global phenomenon last fall.
