FIFA has presented several options for hosting the 2026 World Cup in recent weeks, but they have come under fire, and Arsene Wenger on Sunday presented a new solution found by the global forum.
FIFA, in agreement with the federations, decided to expand the format of the World Cup (from 32 to 48 teams) so that football covers all corners of the world, President Gianni Infantino said in a statement.
The 2026 World Cup is two tournaments with the participation of 24 teams
FIFA’s director of global football development, Wenger, presented three scenarios taken into account (the first two are already known) and said that the final decision will be made by the FIFA Council (of which FRF president Razvan Burleanu is also a member).
“It’s not decided yet, but it could be 16 groups of three teams, 12 groups of four or two series with six groups of four, how to organize two tournaments with 24 teams.
I will not decide it, it will be decided by the FIFA Council and I think it will be decided next year” – Arsene Wenger.
FIFA is also considering penalty kicks in the group stage, with the winning teams receiving a bonus point.
16 cities were selected for CM 2026 US (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Dallas, Atlanta, Houston, Boston, Philadelphia, Miami, New York), Mexico (Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey) and Canada (Toronto, Vancouver).
