Uruguay dramatically lost qualification in the 1/8 finals of the World Cup in Qatar. Despite beating Ghana, South Korea scored the winning goal against Portugal in extra time and Diego Alonso’s side were eliminated.

At the end of the match, striker Luis Suarez could not hold back tears after missing out on qualification. At the last final tournament in his career, Suarez expressed his resentment towards refereeing and FIFA.

“We had two unrealized penalties. Someone needs to explain these decisions to us. After the match, I wanted to see my children, but FIFA did not allow me, although there were children on the bench with the French player. We are too small and FIFA is against us,” the former Barcelona forward told Goal.com.

Edinson Cavani’s nervous exit

And Edinson Cavani had a nervous exit at the end of the match. On the way to the dressing room, a Valencia player hit and knocked over the VAR monitor.

South Korea scored the winning (and qualifying) goal against Portugal (2-1) in the 91st minute, Hee-Chang Hwang’s goal sent the Asians through to the round of 16 and sent Uruguay home.

Uruguay did its job, won the match against Ghana (2:0), but an unpleasant surprise occurred at the end of extra time in another Group H match.
