NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday that it is still too early to draw conclusions about ongoing negotiations over Poland’s request to move Germany-supplied Patriot systems to Ukraine, Reuters reported.
“We all agree on the urgent need to help Ukraine, including with air defense systems,” Stoltenberg said in Berlin at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
However, he added, “it’s important to understand that it’s not just about providing new systems, it’s about making sure the systems that are delivered can work,” including having enough ammunition, spare parts and maintenance.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on Wednesday evening that Germany has decided to transfer the Patriot anti-aircraft system to Ukraine, for which, according to the Kyiv leader, whole generations of Ukrainians will thank Chancellor Scholz, news.ro notes.
Poland previously asked Germany to hand over defense equipment to Kyiv after Berlin offered Warsaw Patriot systems following an incident involving a stray missile on the border with Ukraine.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba, present at the NATO meeting in Bucharest, again called for advanced air defense systems, mentioning among other things the advanced Patriot system.
