The Kremlin has a very clear idea of what movies it wants Russians to see, and the Russian Ministry of Culture publishes a corresponding list.
The ministry responsible for managing Russia’s culture published on Wednesday a list of “priority issues” that filmmakers and producers seeking funding from the Russian state must address.
The list was presented on his page by Twitter Dr Jade McGlynn is a researcher at the University of Oxford and the Department of War Studies at King’s College London.
It includes films about:
1. Preservation, creation and popularization of traditional values;
2. Children, family, their protection and support;
3. Russian science: innovations and technologies;
Moscow wants more films about the Soviet soldier-liberator
4. Anti-falsification of history, Russian peacekeeping missions, historical victories of Russia, the 80th anniversary of the “Great Victory” in the Second World War, the Soviet soldier as a liberator;
5. Russia as a modern, stable and safe state that offers opportunities for development and self-realization;
6. Stories about powerful personalities of modern Russia, popularization of education and schooling;
7. Motivation of young people to study engineering;
8. Traditions from the regions of Russia, life in the provinces, “Little Russia” (absence of the historical name of part of the territory of Ukraine) as part of historical Russia;
9. Classic Russian literature, especially in the form of cartoons (?!);
10. Prominent personalities from history, sports, etc., popularization of the medical profession;
The Kremlin wants Russians to watch movies about Western “decadence.”
11. The fight against Nazism and fascism and popularization of the heroism of Russian soldiers during a special military operation;
12. Popularization of service in the Armed Forces of Russia, rallying society around the support of the army, using history to strengthen the prestige of the military profession;
13. Spiritual, moral and patriotic formation of citizens of Russia;
14. Neocolonial policy of the countries of the Anglo-Saxon world, degradation of Europe, multipolar world;
15. Volunteering, how to live a long and healthy life;
16. Teenagers, instilling in them healthy values and the ability to judge independently;
17. Modern community and unification of society, making the right moral and ethical choice.
The measure is interesting given that Russian authorities have de facto legalized the piracy of Western films since March, despite the decision of several entertainment companies to leave the country in protest at the outbreak of war in Ukraine.
