After an operation with the help of a piano in the operating room, the Salesi hospital in Ancona faced on Monday another technique to remove a vascular malformation in the brain of an 8-year-old boy from Abruzzo, writes Ancona Today, citing Rador.

The operation was performed by surgeon Roberto Trignani, head of neurosurgery at the Torrette Hospital, who also specializes in pediatrics. With him in the operating room were two operators of the Tomatis method, a method of sound stimulation.

“During the procedure, I used an ‘electronic ear’ – essentially headphones – that transmit sound stimuli, in this case Mozart’s music and Gregorian chants, and mechanical stimuli with vibration to the earlobe. At the same time, we recorded an effect on electrical impulses passing through the brain. “The use of the electronic ear is a standardized method called the Tomatis method, which is used especially in the treatment of children with cognitive disabilities,” explained Trignani.

For the first time in the world, according to the surgeon, this method was combined with a surgical intervention, thus directing the team in real time “to act better during the elimination of the malformation.”

Back in November 2019, Dr. Trignani operated on a child to music at the Salesi Hospital in Ancona. Then a piano, played by maestro Emiliano Toso, entered the operating room.

Thanks to the support of the Salesi Foundation and its visionary potential, as well as the competence and experience of specialized operators from the DSA Center in Ancona and the Atelier di Movimento Association in Milan, it was possible to act in a comprehensive and coordinated manner.

The child was hospitalized in the Department of Child Neuropsychiatry of the Salezi Hospital, which is headed by Dr. Carla Marini.

The operation on Monday lasted more than four hours, then the child was transferred to the intensive care unit to wait for him to wake up. If there are no complications, he can go home in a week.
