The solemn meeting of the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate, dedicated to the celebration of the National Day of Romania, was marked by scandal after UDMR deputy Choma Botond declared from the podium that “the political and religious leaders of the Transylvanian Romanians knew very well that Transylvania was not only Romanian, but also Hungarian, Saxon and Hebrew”. Senator Diana Soshoake, who was holding a tricolor flag next to her, considered this statement as “treason” and demanded that the anti-Romanians leave the country. For their part, the Ukrainian SSR parliamentarians left the plenary meeting hall. Later, the Minister of Culture, Senator Lucian Romašcanu, wrote on Facebook that Transylvania is the history of Romanians, even if it is also inhabited by minorities.

“There have been many cases in history when we were on different sides of the barricades. Despite this fact, we cannot accept the exclusivist reductionist vision that reduces Romanian-Hungarian relations to a permanent conflict and thus perpetuates the image of the enemy, seriously affecting inter-ethnic relations (…) The leaders and religious leaders of the Transylvanian Romanians knew very well that that Transylvania was not only Romanian, but also Hungarian, Saxon and Jewish, and this was also reflected in the text of the Declaration from Alba Iulia,” said UDMR deputy Choma on Monday, at a ceremonial meeting in the Botond parliament, News.ro agency reports.

During the speech, Senator Diana Shoshoake stood up and began to shout: “You are in Romania, guys, you have no shame! Shame on you! Anti-Romanians, leave the country immediately! We never belonged to the shekels! I will never allow this! Romania, long live Romania! Free Romania! Get him out! This is unacceptable! The Székelys are not even Hungarians. I will never accept such a disgusting accusation made in the Romanian Parliament. This is treason.”

Shoshoake called on his fellow parliamentarians to leave the hall, and the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Marcel Cholaku, asked for silence, apostrophizing Diana Shoshoeke.

Choma Botond continued her speech, noting among other things: “We believe that our future is shared in this country, we plan our future on these lands, we do not want to leave this country, and we are partners in the conceptualization and implementation of those country projects, which improve the everyday life of the citizens of this country, regardless of ethnicity, and force us all not to embark on the path of emigration. I think this will be our common path.”

Senators and deputies of AUR left the hall of plenary meetings.

“I left the meeting hall at the solemn meeting of the Verkhovna Rada on the Day of the Assembly and laughed at the chauvinistic statements of the UDMR, which is held in the arms of the current coalition. We were not given a word to respond to the rubbish that was said,” AUR leader George Simion wrote on Facebook.

For his part, PSD Senator Lucian Romaşcanu, Minister of Culture, reacted with a post on Facebook.

“Among the speeches of the parliamentarians, full of patriotism and historical data, a controversial one, unfortunately, was delivered by the MP of UDMR, MP Choma Botond. Being a “warm” answer, I’ll just summarize a few ideas:

– Transylvania is the history of Romanians, where Hungarians, Saxons and Jews lived and live.

– the statement from Alba Iulia was and remains a respected promise of the Romanian state.

– Romania is cited as a serious example of good practice in the treatment of minorities, including Hungarian: representation in the parliament, presence in almost all governments after December, education at all levels in the mother tongue, etc. and so on

For all this, Romania and Romanians should be respected and appreciated!

No one should have a reason or interest in playing a dangerous card that has historically proven to have great destructive potential,” Romashkanu wrote.
