Ardalan Shekarabi, spokesman for Sweden’s Social Democrats, said his party would not oppose Romania joining the Schengen zone, just two weeks after they opposed it.
The announcement was made by both Bohdan Aurescu, Romania’s foreign minister, who welcomed the decision, and Victor Negrescu, a social democrat, who praised his party’s diplomacy.
Thank you very much, Mr. Ardalan Shekarabi @shekaribifor your positive statement today regarding Romania’s accession to #Schengen, also after our very good and comprehensive uD83DuDCDEtalk on November 22. The Swedish government consists of right-wing parties, and the social democrats in the opposition united with the extremists and voted against the proposal to expand Schengen in the justice committee, the main reason for which was the lack of consultation and prior negotiations with the government.
According to the cited sources, Bucharest has found allies in this matter in the heads of diplomacy of Luxembourg and Finland, who have good relations with the Swedish Social Democrats. There was also a lobby at the level of MEPs.
