Miroslav Skrzyczynski, the president of the Polish Tennis Federation accused of sexual harassment and violence, resigned on Thursday, the forum said, according to AFP.
“Myroslav Skshipchynskyi submitted his resignation at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the Federation. The resignation was accepted unanimously,” the federation said.
On Monday, the president of the forum was accused by the Polish deputy Katarzyna Kotula of sexual harassment, which allegedly took place in the 1990s, when she was 13-14 years old.
The deputy specified that other players became victims of Skshipczynski during that period, when the man was training at a club in the north-west of Poland. Recently, other accusations against the head of the tennis federation appeared in the Polish press from some persons who were quoted under the guise of anonymity.
The Polish federation announced that it would set up an independent commission of three women to investigate the case. The commission will have to submit a report within six months.
Iga Svyatek, reaction to the case of Miroslav Skshipchinsky: “I cannot remain silent.” This is a serious problem”
A day after the explosion of the scandal, Iga Svyatek (1 WTA) expressed her opinion in a post on Twitter.
“I feel that as the current leader of world tennis, I cannot be silent about some things. I remember I appreciated that I had the freedom to decide whether I wanted to talk about something or not. I know that when it comes to physical abuse or emotional abuse, the most important thing is to think about the victims and be compassionate. When we talk about something wrong, we should think about it first.
I am against violence in sports, in tennis, in all disciplines and in everyday life. Therefore, I consider the news about the president of the Polish Tennis Federation to be a serious matter.
It is up to the governing bodies to determine what happened and I hope they will deal with this matter after the media writes people’s stories. It is not my role to carry out the work of authorities or journalists, because this is too serious a matter that affects people’s lives and health.
I believe I can encourage you to seek help when something bad happens in and out of sports, when there is a possibility that someone is suffering from domestic violence or emotional abuse. If someone is suffering from these reasons, it is important to take care of them and seek support.
It is very important to empathize with people who are suffering, especially if they do not have the tools or power to make themselves heard. It is important to be alert, speak and help.
Personally, I’ve been lucky enough not to go through such difficult situations, and I’m grateful to my father for the way he handled my career. I have a great team, I am privileged. However, I realize that not every athlete benefits from this independence. I hope that with the highlighting of such problems and their solution, sport will change for the better, both in Poland and in the world” – Iga Svyatekon Twitter on Tuesday.
