Novak Djokovic (35) has been in superb form since his Champions Tour triumph and Mats Wilander is confident the Serb can continue his career after missing out on two Grand Slams this year.
Nole defeated Norway’s Kasper Ruud (7-5, 6-3) in the last act of the tournament in Turin and will play again at the end of the year at the exhibition tournament, which will be held in Dubai.
However, in addition to other tournaments won this year, the former ATP leader also missed out on two Grand Slams after refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.
Mats Wilander believes that Djokovic can continue his career in 2022
Novak Djokovic has had a rough start to 2022 after missing out on the Australian Open and even being banned from Australia. However, even if he did not perform at the US Open, Djokovic won at Wimbledon and, most importantly, at the Tournament of Champions held in Turin.
Sweden’s Mats Wilander, a former tennis great with 7 Grand Slam titles, believes this tumultuous year could further motivate Djokovic to continue his career and stay on the court for at least two more years.
“Novak was so close to being cleared to go to the Australian Open and so close to being cleared to go to the US Open and it would never affect his training pace or training.
Because he was not allowed to go, I think from a physical point of view, it may be difficult for him to play five sets, seven matches, but he can handle it.
But emotionally, I feel like he’s added another year or two to his career because he probably has to be a little upset about what happened.
But it is obvious that Novak understands perfectly well what happened, and there is nothing you can do about it. Is it good or bad? It doesn’t really matter… So I think he’s capable of understanding it.
But I think it looks so fresh, it looks so good. I can’t understand or believe that he didn’t win the tournament in Paris.
I was shocked he didn’t win that tournament. But he played pretty well, you can’t win everything.” – he said Mats Wilander for Eurosport.
