Activists from Animal Rebellion, a plant-based movement, occupied a three-star Michelin restaurant owned by chef Gordon Ramsay in London on Saturday night, Agerpres reports.
The activists, who Animal Rebellion said numbered 14, sat at tables reserved for customers and brandished “dummy menus” that listed the environmental impact of the food served at the restaurant, the group explained in a statement.
“Among the foods we find beef and steak have the biggest carbon footprint and use the most land” to raise animals, criticized Animal Rebellion.
The restaurant was forced to close its doors early Saturday evening after the militants refused to leave their seats.
It is a “perfect example” of inequality in the UK, warned Lucia Alexander, a 39-year-old nurse who was at the protest at the restaurant.
“While Gordon Ramsay serves meals that cost at least £155 (€178) per person, over two million people depend on food banks because of the cost of living crisis,” she added.
“Instead of the huge profits that restaurants make at the expense of animals, workers and the climate, we could feed all of humanity by supporting farmers and fishermen to go plant-based,” she said.
The restaurant’s spokeswoman criticized this action as “deeply disrespectful.”
“Everyone has the right to their own opinion and belief,” she said. “However, to barge into a restaurant, disrupt hardworking staff and spoil the evening for customers who have been waiting months to get a reservation is incredibly inappropriate,” she criticized.
