Norway defended the trophy it won two years ago after defeating Denmark 27-25 in the European Women’s Handball Championship final.

Denmark got off to a great start and pulled away by five goals (9-4 and 10-5). The Danes held the advantage until the 45th minute, when the scoreboard was 22-18, and seemed to be on their way to victory over their opponents (they won 31-29 in the last match of the main group I).

But Norway did not agree. The reigning world champion fought back goal after goal (with the help of Kathryn Lunde and MVP Henny Reystad) to claim her ninth European title.

Know:

  • Nora Mork was named the best player of the final in Ljubljana and the top scorer of this tournament with 50 goals.
  • Norway previously won the European Championship in 1998, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2016 and 2020.
  • Norway has qualified directly for the 2024 Paris Olympics as well as the 2023 World Cup. Denmark and Montenegro will also qualify for next year’s world finals.
  • It was Romania’s 14th participation in the Women’s Handball European Championship (the “tricolors” finished in 12th place), and the best result was third place in 2010.
  • For the last time in her career at the European Championship, Kristina Nyagu was recognized as the best left winger of the competition.
