Donald Trump said on Saturday he was not interested in returning to Twitter, even though a (small) majority voted for the former US president’s return in a poll organized by new owner Elon Musk, Reuters reported.

Just over 15 million Twitter users voted in the poll, with 51.8% favoring Trump’s reinstatement.

“The people have decided. Trump will be reinstated,” Musk wrote on Twitter.

Trump’s Twitter account, which had more than 88 million followers before it was suspended on January 8, 2021, has started to gain followers again and has more than 9 million followers at the time of writing.

Trump, however, didn’t seem thrilled with the idea

“I don’t see any reason to,” the former president said when asked if he planned to return to Twitter during a panel discussion at the Jewish Republican Coalition’s annual leadership meeting.

He said he would stick with his new platform, Truth Social, an app developed by his startup Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which he said had engaged users better than Twitter and was doing “phenomenally well.”

Trump, who on Tuesday launched his bid to win back the White House in 2024, praised Musk and said he had always admired him.

But Trump also said Twitter was plagued by bots, fake accounts and that the problems it faced were “unbelievable.”

The former president was active in Truth Social

If Trump does return to Twitter, the move would cast doubt on his commitment to Truth Social, which launched on Apple’s App Store in February and Google’s Play Store in October.

Trump has approximately 4.57 million followers on Truth Social.

Truth Social has been Trump’s primary source of direct communication with his followers since he began posting regularly on the app in May.

He has used Truth Social to promote his allies, criticize his opponents, and defend his reputation during a variety of state, federal, and congressional investigations.

However, his deal with the company leaves room for Trump to engage more broadly in other platforms. Trump is required to give Truth Social six hours of exclusivity on any post, but he can post “political messages, political fundraising or vote-getting efforts” on any site at any time, according to an SEC filing last month in May
