student groups they practically ignore the latter Kerameo Law which provides that the representatives of the students to their faculty meeting must be chosen by a single vote. In very few FOREVER AND EVER the corresponding elections were called, and where they took place, there were no candidates. The exception is the Polytechnic of Crete, where elections are scheduled today. “I don’t like it when parties interfere with universities.” Tells “K” 19-year-old Konstantinos Pisimisis.student of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Single vote
In particular, from October 7, 2022, a new institutional framework for the representation of students in the bodies of the university (for example, the general meeting of the department) is in force, determined by the Law on Kerameo 4957 / 21.7. 2022. On their basis, student representatives are elected by direct and secret ballot, conducted exclusively in electronic form through Zeus system and from unified vote (not factional ballots). Kerameo Law 4957/2022 (Article 450) provides that student representatives appointed before July 21, 2022 continue to participate in the governing bodies until the end of their term.
With the exception of the Technical University of Crete, there were no candidates in the few university institutions where elections were called.
With the new law, since student elections are not held since party ballots but with one an attempt is made to soften the partisanship. In essence, student party factions cannot be abolished, since their formation is provided for and protected by the Constitution and the civil code. Of course, it is possible that in the unified vote, the members of the factions gave a “line” for voting for specific party candidates.
According with information from “K”, at the Technical University of Crete, at the Thracian University of Democritus, at the University of Western Macedonia and at some faculties of the Agricultural University of Athens, Univ. Thessaly, un-t. Piraeus, EKPA and Univ. Patras announced elections based on the current legislation, according to which students will elect representatives to administrative bodies with a term of office from 01/01/2023 to 12/31/2023. However, in most cases there were no candidates. The only exception is the Technical University of Crete. “A student who is independent can ask for changes that are not related to party activities. When you belong to a faction or party, you select a side that serves the interests of the party. That is why student factions are discredited and students do not trust them,” says Konstantinos Pisimisis.
From the side Sofia Spintakithird-year student of the School of Production and Management of the Institute, said K. that “with a single vote, every student is given the opportunity to participate in this electoral process. In previous years, we did not have representation in administrative bodies, which did not give us the opportunity to convey the problems and concerns of students to the general meetings of the faculty. This is a first-time measure at our institution and I hope that student participation will be appropriate in such an important process.”
