Wimbledon will abandon the tournament’s strict dress code and allow players to wear dark underwear to solve the problems of female athletes who are on their periods, writes The Guardian.
Players will be able to wear dark underwear at Wimbledon
At Wimbledon, all athletes must wear all white.
The decision follows protests at this year’s tournament by the Address The Dress Code campaign, which sought to highlight the anxiety women can feel competing in white, and criticism from Judy Murray and Billie Jean King.
“We are committed to supporting players and listening to their feedback on how they can perform at their best. I am pleased to confirm that following consultation with the players and representatives of a number of stakeholder groups, the governing committee has taken the decision to update the white rule at Wimbledon.
This means that from next year, women and girls participating in this tournament will be able to wear colored underwear if they choose. We hope this rule adjustment will help players focus solely on their performance, reducing a potential source of anxiety.” – Sally Boltonexecutive director of the All England Club, quoted by News.ro.
The All England Club added that “rules for other items of clothing, accessories and equipment remain unchanged”.
