Learn letters, my child, but in … a distant school

Do students suffer so teachers don’t miss? This conclusion is reinforced until a solution is given and they continue to argue. Calamaria parents of about 80 students, directors of two schools, director of the local department of secondary education. And all this despite his clear indication Ministry of Education accept the request of the students. Let’s unravel the tangle of history.

Kalamaria Secondary School No. 3, which is closest to the student residences of the Kalamaria Annex in Nea Krini and Foinika, has 21 classrooms, of which 17 are for general education courses and 4 for orientation courses.

However, the Directorate of Secondary Education decided to declare only 16 classes on the My School platform, i.e. 5 classes less (the number of classrooms of the 3rd lari is confirmed by the plans of technical services). The announcement of fewer classrooms has resulted in a reduction in the number of students that Kalamaria 3rd General High School can take in and the distribution of some of them to nearby schools. “The Directorate of Secondary Education bears the appropriate responsibility for the distribution, it does not work irregularly”, says “K” General Secretary of the Ministry of Education Alexander Koptsis, who hails from Thessaloniki and held the position of Regional Education Manager there. “Contrary to the law that defines the maximum distance from home to school for high school students at an altitude of 1500 meters (YA 37237 / Σ1 / 2007 Official Gazette 635 / B / 27-4-2007),” say the parents of the children who filed the appeal. against the decision of the Board of Secondary Education.

About 30 students were distributed on the 5th lari of Kalamaria. Conversely, the 5th lari, according to the plans of the technical services of the municipality of Kalamaria, has 8 classrooms, but according to the parents, the Department of Secondary Education states that the school has 12 classrooms, and for this reason 11 general education rooms were created. classes. It is said that in order to accommodate 11 departments in 8 rooms, the 5th lari Kalamaria borrowed one cinema hall and two computer rooms from the 4th lari Kalamaria, with which it is located.

In addition, students of the 3rd lari were distributed to other general secondary schools in the area, for example, to the 6th. As the parents told “K” yesterday, according to estimates, about 80 students moved to other schools, and they were accommodated in the 3rd lari without any problems. Of course, 21 parents of the 5th grade went to court, as “the rest either accepted the fact, or their children went to more closed schools”, such as accent in “K” mother and general secretary of the district parents’ association, Ms. Catherine Emmanuel.

After the reaction, it was suggested that the students “return” from the 5th lari to the 3rd lari through a transfer. However, despite his initial positive response, in the end the 5th District leadership, which has the appropriate authority, does not seem to agree to the transfers.

The case reached the central service of the Ministry of Education. Such as explained “K” yesterday Mr Koptsis, the teacher associations of the two schools must find a solution and allow the transfers. In fact, Mr. Koptsis assured that there would be no reduction in the number of departments, which means that no one in the regular positions of teachers on the 5th lari and after expansion would be forced to move to another school.

tug of war

And at this point comes, as most acknowledge, the main reason for the tug-of-war between the GEL and the competent Thessaloniki Secondary Education Authority regarding students: the use of staff and the desire of teachers cannot be forced to change schools, which may be close to home, or they may be asked teach at more than one school in the same area in addition to their mandatory weekly schedule. Of course, the teachers of the 5th lari refute this statement about … execution.

But parents call them to action: “If organic positions aren’t your problem, why don’t you let your kids go and work on your hours at neighborhood schools?” Why are you asking the municipality to put in a bus to transport the kids when there are classes in their area? We Greek taxpayers paid to see empty classrooms in our school in our area, and now you are asking us to pay for a bus that will take our children to school several kilometers away? And all this for the benefit of the educational process and a higher level of education?”
