American actor Alec Baldwin sued several members of the film crew of the film “Rust” over the shooting that killed cameraman Galina Hutchins in 2021, Reuters reports.
Baldwin filed a complaint in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Baldwin’s complaint targets gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, assistant director Dave Halls, props supplier Seth Kenny and props supervisor Sarah Zachry. Attorneys for Gutierrez-Reid, Halls and Kenny did not immediately respond to requests for comment from their clients’ defense. Reuters was unable to locate a lawyer for Zakri.
All four were also named as defendants along with Baldwin in the original lawsuit filed by script supervisor Mamie Mitchell, who claimed that filming caused her severe emotional distress.
Baldwin’s complaint alleges that she is seeking damages, to be determined at trial, for the “tremendous pain” she suffered.
“This tragedy occurred because real bullets were brought onto the set and loaded into the gun, Gutierrez-Reid failed to thoroughly inspect the bullets or the gun, Halls failed to thoroughly inspect the gun, but declared the gun safe before handing it over to Baldwin and Zachry failed to disclose that Gutierrez-Reed acted recklessly and posed a safety threat to others,” Baldwin’s complaint states.
Hutchins was killed while rehearsing Baldwin with a gun while filming in New Mexico.
In the interview, the actor said that he did not pull the trigger of the Colt .45 revolver, but an FBI examination showed that it was “functioning normally” and did not fire without the trigger.
