Dacian Cholos, REPER formation donor and MEP, former president of USR-PLUS and former prime minister, says that he is not in a position to announce his possible candidacy for the presidential elections in 2024, but that he is trying to understand “which president they want Romanians”.

Ciolos believes that “in Romania in the coming years, parties and politicians are not the only solution.” The MEP stated that he will not run for the position of the head of REPER.

“We’ll see. I’m not in a position to announce such a decision yet. First of all, I want to see and understand what kind of president Romanians want. (…) I’m interested in how Romanians see Romania now, how they see their future, with what concerns , are there still elements of optimism, and if so, what are they, how can they be strengthened. And there is one more thing: I believe that in Romania in the coming years, parties and politicians are not the only solution. I am part of the solution, but I believe that – and I’ve noticed it in recent years, and even more so when I go out on the field, but since 2016, since I’ve been prime minister, I’ve seen a lot of powers and solutions to the problems that we’ve had going out from the civil society, from the business environment. I, in the last two or three years, apart from the campaign period when the parties presented their political programs, I did not really see a serious debate in the political environment about the development prospects of Romania, instead I saw in the business environment” , – said Dacian Cholos on Saturday’s Insider Politic show and Prima TV, quoted by News.ro

He claims that on the topic of candidates for the upcoming presidential elections “there are only discussions going on at the moment”, emphasizing that “clear answers are given when the question is clearly formulated” and “this question should be answered when the time comes”, while there are other affairs”.

Dacian Cholos says he will not run for the position of president of his REPER party: “I don’t need any position”

“I will not run for the position of the head of REPER, nor for the leadership of any other political party. (…) I don’t need any function. I was a prime minister, I was a European commissioner, I was a minister, I was the leader of a political group in the European Parliament, I am not a position. I don’t need a position to be able to express my opinion and do something for Romania and Romanians. I believe in the youth, I believe that there are young people in REPERA who can take responsibility in the party and whom I will support. We will try to target not only the political message, but also the proposals to young people, whom we want to involve not so much in politics, but in what Romania needs at the moment. They should feel that they are part of this project,” said Dacian Cholos.

He claims that he does not leave the public space and that he is in Brussels only three days a week, and the rest of the time he tries to find out what are the problems of Romanians in the country.

“I have not disappeared from public space, I am still active here (in the European Parliament – no), I am doing my job, completing my mandate as a member of the European Parliament. Of course, I didn’t sit on TV all day, it doesn’t mean that I’m not there, that I didn’t do and don’t do. I am not attracted to political cancan, and I am not one of those politicians who talk just to do business and be in the media. (…) I have not retired at all (from political life – no),” the MEP also stated in the same show.

Cholos also spoke about the results of his analysis related to the USR-PLUS experience.

“My main conclusion is that very often we spent a lot of energy on all kinds of internal disputes and did not focus enough on how the party is perceived externally, on what people expect from us,” he said.
