The first message sent by Elon Musk, the new CEO and owner of Twitter, to all employees of the social network was an email sent at 02:39 a.m., according to Business Insider.

“I’m sorry this is the first email for the entire company, but there’s no way to sweeten the message.

Frankly, the economic landscape ahead is bleak, especially for a company like ours that is so dependent on advertising in a difficult economic environment. Also, 70% of our advertising is brand, not specific performance, making us doubly vulnerable!” he wrote in an email obtained by Bloomberg reporters.

The South African billionaire, who officially took control of Twitter in late October, told employees in an email that remote work would be completely canceled and that they would have to be in the office 40 hours a week.

Musk implemented the same policy at Tesla in June of this year, giving the electric car maker’s employees an ultimatum: get back to your desk or leave.

“Anyone who wants to work remotely must be in the office a minimum (and I mean minimum) of 40 hours per week or leave Tesla,” he said in an internal document sent to employees.

Musk Takes Weekend Off Twitter, Apology From Jack Dorsey

In a new email obtained by Twitter staff, he clarified that, as with Tesla, any deviation from the office work rule would have to be approved by him personally.

“The road ahead is difficult and will require hard work to succeed,” he emphasized.

The news comes after Twitter employees noticed just days after Musk took over that “rest days,” a program implemented by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey, had been removed from their work schedules.

Dorsey, who stepped down as Twitter CEO last November to focus on his other company, apologized on Sunday to the employees Musk plans to lay off.

“I am responsible for the fact that everyone ended up in this situation: I developed the company too quickly. I apologize for that,” Dorsey tweeted.

“The people of Twitter, past and present, are strong and resilient. They will always find a way out, no matter how difficult the moment is. I understand that many people are angry with me,” the American businessman added.

Elon Musk is currently the CEO of three companies

Immediately after gaining control of Twitter, Musk fired Dorsey’s successor as CEO, Parag Agrawal, the company’s chief financial officer and head of legal affairs.

Musk blamed them for Twitter’s refusal to provide him with data on the number of fake accounts, so-called “bots,” on the social media platform. That was the reason he gave when he suspended the process of buying the company last May.

Just days after Agrawal’s firing, Musk announced that he would take over as CEO of Twitter himself, a position he also holds at Tesla and SpaceX.

However, Neuralink, his neuroscience research company, is headed by Jared Birchall, one of the billionaire’s confidants.
