US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday that he is “ready” to work with the Republican opposition in Congress after he managed to resist the conservative “wave” promised in the midterms, AFP reports.
“I am ready to work with the Republican opposition,” the leader of the Democrats said, noting that he is open to all “good ideas.” Joe Biden said that the leaders of the opposition will soon be invited to the White House.
The midterm legislative elections were “a good day for democracy,” said President Joe Biden, whose Democratic camp limited losses despite projections pointing to a large Republican lead in the House of Representatives.
“We had an election yesterday. And it was a good day, I think, for democracy. And I think it was a good day for America,” he said at a news conference.
And “while the press and experts predicted a huge red wave, it didn’t happen,” the US president added, referring to the color of the Republican Party.
On Wednesday, conservatives were well-positioned to take control of the House after Tuesday’s vote, but their rivals fared better than expected, even keeping their chances of keeping the Senate alive. Joe Biden, however, acknowledged that “there are still many people who are suffering.”
“Voters have been very clear about their concerns, rising prices … and the need to bring down inflation,” he said, also mentioning the “crime and safety” concerns Republicans are pushing.
But Americans “also sent a clear and unequivocal message that they want to preserve our democracy and protect the right to choose in this country,” he said, while abortion rights were one of the main topics of the election campaign.
“I want to especially thank the young people of this country, who I was told (…) that they voted again at a historic rate, as they did two years ago,” said the leader of the White House. “I think the American people have made it clear that they expect Republicans to be willing to work with me,” he said.
