Pro-Kremlin groups in Russia hope Republicans will win control of Congress in the US midterm elections, a result they say will make it harder for Democratic President Joe Biden to pass military aid packages for Ukraine, Reuters reports. Some Russians also predict that this election will ultimately spell America’s demise.
But for now, few in Moscow expect the bipartisan US political consensus on Ukraine to fall apart regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s midterm elections. It is not expected that Washington’s support for Kyiv will significantly decrease in the near future.
Instead, pro-Kremlin Russians hope that the results will be challenged and that the American political system will face further upheaval in the coming years.
Their position reflects President Vladimir Putin’s personal belief that Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine is part of a historic transition from a US-dominated world to a multipolar one where the views of countries like Russia and China must be taken into account.
“The victory of the Republicans in the elections to the US Congress will not lead to a revolution in US foreign policy and an end to Washington’s support for Ukraine,” Russian senator and foreign policy expert Oleksiy Pushkov wrote in the Telegram messenger.
“However, it will be more difficult for the Biden administration to promote programs of financial assistance to Kyiv through Congress, and the position of American critics of unlimited aid to Ukraine will be significantly strengthened,” he added.
Pushkov, who was sanctioned by the European Union in March for voting to support Moscow’s Ukraine policy, believes there is a chance Republicans will target what he called Biden’s “wasteful” spending on Ukraine through 2024 to his detriment. the popularity of the Democrats.
But a report by the Moscow-based Institute for International Studies, which shares its research with Russia’s Foreign Ministry and other government agencies, concluded that the sentiment of what it called the American establishment and electorate meant the election was unlikely to lead to major changes in the country. Washington’s policy towards Ukraine.
Ukraine rarely emerged as a top issue among voters, with those polled ahead of the election mostly citing concerns about domestic issues such as inflation, crime and abortion.
Russia hopes for the internal polarization of the US, which will lead to civil war
Russia’s ultra-nationalist circles were confident that the midterm elections, in which Republicans were projected to gain control of the House and possibly the Senate, would be positive for their long-term interests.
Tsargrad, a news website and television station funded by Russian ultra-nationalist tycoon Konstantin Malofeev, predicted that the election would ultimately spell America’s demise.
“At a critical moment in world history, these elections can have a great impact on the geopolitical environment, especially on Ukraine,” he writes.
At the same time, he said, the election would undermine the US domestically and end America as we know it today, talking about the theoretical possibility of civil war due to political polarization and mistrust of the election results.
If such a dramatic scenario unfolded, Washington, according to Tsargrad’s forecasts, would not have the opportunity to continue its Ukrainian policy.
In an article in RIA, columnist Pyotr Akopov also predicted that Russia will be the real winner of the US election, as the vote will deepen political divisions ahead of the 2024 presidential election, which he predicts will be competitive.
“Even if they survive as a single state, the United States will change radically, and its global position will weaken under any circumstances,” Akopov believes.
