In a letter allegedly sent from the front to the governor of a region in Russia, fighters from the 155th Marine Brigade of the Russian Pacific Fleet say they were thrown into an “unexplained battle” in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine, CNN reports.

The letter, published on Monday by a well-known Russian military blog, was sent to the governor of the Primorsky Krai.

“Once again we were thrown into an incomprehensible battle by General Muradov and his best man, his compatriot Akhmedov, so that Muradov would earn bonuses to look good in the eyes of Gerasimov. [şeful Statului Major General al Rusiei]”, the letter says. “As a result of the “carefully” planned offensive of the “great commanders”, we lost about 300 people, killed and wounded, several have gone missing in the last 4 days,” the letter says.

“We lost 50% of the equipment. This is only in the case of our brigade. The district command, together with Akhmedov, hides these facts and distorts the official statistics of the dead people, fearing not to bear responsibility.” In the letter, they asked Governor Oleg Kozhemyako: “How long will such mediocrities like Muradov and Akhmedov be allowed to continue planning military operations just to keep up appearances and be rewarded with the lives of so many people?”

CNN could not verify how many soldiers signed the letter or their ranks, but Kozemiako confirmed that he received the letter from soldiers in the unit.

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, called the fierce fighting in parts of the Donetsk region “the epicenter of the greatest madness of the occupiers.” “Hundreds die every day,” Zelenskyy said. “The land in front of the Ukrainian positions is literally littered with corpses of the occupiers,” he noted in his diary.
