Elon Musk’s Twitter layoffs hit India hard, cutting more than 90 percent of its workforce over the weekend. The fallout is serious given that India is a land of heated debates on Twitter and plenty of misinformation, so online moderation is needed.

Twitter has 7,500 employees worldwide, 3,700 of whom will be laid off, and less than 20 of the 200 will remain in India, in offices in New Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore.

That’s a problem because India is Twitter’s third-largest country with 24 million users, ahead of the US and Japan.

The problem is that in India, political debates are raging on Twitter, people are accusing each other of many things and misinformation is spreading. Under these conditions, moderation is a big problem, when almost all the people who used to work on Twitter are kicked out.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has 84 million followers online.
