According to information published on Saturday by the left-wing weekly Documento, Greece’s former prime minister and several ministers who are still in office are among the politicians illegally wiretapped, writes AFP.
According to Documento, among the victims are former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, current Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Finance, Development, Labor and Tourism, as well as ship owner Vangelis Marinakis, owner of the Olympiakos and Nottingham Forest football clubs.
The weekly, which has ties to the left-wing opposition party Syriza, said it had received the information “from two people who play a key role in the surveillance.” The malware was also used to infect the phones of not only the targeted individuals but also some of their relatives, he said.
The European Parliament on Friday asked Greece to conduct an “urgent and thorough” investigation into the case of illegal wiretapping that has disturbed the political climate in the country in recent months, Agerpres reports.
Some of them are influential members of the ruling conservative New Democracy party and potential rivals of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The case came to light in July when Nikos Androulakis, a member of the European Parliament and leader of the Socialist Party of Greece, filed a complaint about repeated attempts to tap his phone using the Predator spyware.
Two journalists and another prominent opposition politician later revealed that they too had been the victims of surveillance by Greek intelligence services.
The scandal led to the resignation of the head of the special services and the prime minister’s nephew and adviser in August.
The government has admitted to surveilling Androulakis, without explaining why, but has denied using illegal software.
