
At a time of rising tensions in the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, the Greek and Cypriot Bar Associations are organizing an event tomorrow, Saturday, November 5, in Nicosia, with the participation of leading politicians and lawyers from Greece and Cyprus, with the theme “Demarcation of maritime zones in the Eastern Mediterranean”.
Initially, three Greek prime ministers who have been involved in developments in the region over the past decade will speak: George Papandreou, Antonis Samaras and Alexis Tsipras.
This will be followed by a discussion moderated by the director of the English edition of Kathimerini, Athanasios Ellis, and the statements of the three main candidates for the presidency of Cyprus in the elections in February next year – Nikos Christodoulides, Averof Neophytou and Andreas Mavroyiannis.
After that, they will present their opinion. of Education and Professor of International Law Angelos Sirygos (“Maps of the Eastern Mediterranean”), Honorary Head of GEETHA and former Minister of National Defense Evangelos Apostolakis (“Marine Zones in the Eastern Mediterranean: Opportunities and Risks in Current Conditions”), Lecturer in International Law and Maritime Law Antonis Stylianou (“Challenges to Turkey on the Aegean Continental Shelf and in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus and their geopolitical ramifications”), as well as Anna Koukkidis-Prokopiou, Adviser of the International Crisis Group on Cyprus and Turkey (“Geopolitical Context and Balance of Power – Opportunities and Threats for the Eastern Mediterranean” ).
“The Plenum, under the weight of Turkish provocation and unacceptable doubts and undermining international law, has repeatedly intervened and brought to the fore, within its institutional role, a number of issues of national interest and the protection of human rights. right,” emphasizes Dimitris Vervesos, Chairman of the Plenary Session of the Presidents of the Greek Bar Associations, who will speak at the event together with his colleague from the PANC, Christos Cleridis.

- Dr. Anastasia Strati, Expert, Ambassador-Counselor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, “Principles of demarcation and the rights of islands to maritime zones”
- Dr. Nicholas A. Ioannidis, Chairman of the International and European Law Committee of the PDS and Lecturer in Public International Law at the University of Cyprus, “Agreements on the demarcation of the maritime zone between the Republic of Cyprus and neighboring states”
- Dr. Thomas Nektarios Papanastasiou, Associate Professor of International Public Law at the Neapolis University in Paphos, “Issues of international energy investment in the maritime areas of Cyprus”.
