Ukrainian forces, using weapons captured from Russian forces, fired on Russian targets near the key eastern city of Bakhmut on Friday as fighting continued in an area Moscow is trying to seize, Reuters reported.
Russian troops repeatedly attacked Bakhmut and the neighboring city of Avdiyivka in the Donetsk region, but were repulsed with, according to Kyiv, significant losses.
“Last week there was very intense fighting … there are a lot of Russians and equipment,” said the soldier, who gave his name only as Moriak, which is Ukrainian for sailor.
Reuters journalists saw a captured Russian T-80 tank and a 2C23 Nona SVK self-propelled mortar, now controlled by Ukrainian crews, firing at targets near Bakhmut.
