Shipwreck with migrants in Steno Kafirea: one of the missing is found alive

One of the missing was found alive in his area Wall of Kafireawhere before Boat with migrants sank.

The rescued man was discovered by a freighter that was hijacked by the Coast Guard’s Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center (JCS) and then the Coast Guard picked him up and took him to Karystos.

In the area between Evia and Andros, a search and rescue operation has been underway since early morning, with nine people previously rescued.

According to an official statement from the Coast Guard, early in the morning on the international emergency number 112, the migrants reported that they were in danger, without specifying the exact location.

A Coast Guard search and rescue operation followed. Finally, a high seas patrol boat located and detained 9 people (Afghans and Iranians) at about 7 am from the rocky island of Mandilos in the Kafirea Strait. It should be noted that when they were discovered, none of the rescued had life-saving equipment (life jackets).

Rescuers reported that they were on board a sailboat that sank north of the island, carrying 68 people. Since early morning, searches have been conducted for the remaining passengers of the boat.

The search and rescue operation involves a Coast Guard ship and a helicopter, as well as two ships sailing side by side. In the seaside area, weather conditions are unfavorable, with a northerly wind of 7-8 on the Beaufort scale and wind gusts of up to 9 on the Beaufort scale.

According to information, a boat with migrants – originally from Afghanistan, Egypt and Iran – left Izmir and sank in Greek waters.

Speaking earlier to “K” about the ongoing operation with floating and air assets, Nikos Kokkalas, a spokesman for the Hellenic Coast Guard, Vice Captain L.S., said that this is a very difficult rescue operation due to the prevailing bad weather conditions, here why hopes of finding the remaining 59 passengers safe are anemic.

As Mr. Kokkalas notes: “We rescued 9 people from the stone island. Rescuers are taken by boat to Karystos for first aid. According to them, women and children were also on the sunken sailboat. This is the third major shipwreck we’ve seen in a month.”
