Sweden and Finland have met Turkey’s requirements for NATO membership and it is time to welcome them to the alliance, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Thursday, Reuters reported.
“It is time to welcome Finland and Sweden as full NATO members,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu in Istanbul.
“In these dangerous times, it is even more important to complete their accession to prevent any misunderstandings or miscalculations in Moscow.”
Until now, 28 member states – out of 30 – of the North Atlantic Alliance have ratified the accession of Sweden and Finland. Only Hungary and Turkey had to give their final consent.
Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said at a press conference on Thursday that Hungary’s parliament will decide when to schedule a debate on the ratification of Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership bids.
Siyarto noted that the government has done its job by submitting the relevant bill to the parliament.
