Why does summer continue in Europe?

He did not have time to “digest” extremely hot summer who lived with them historical heatwaves, and an equally unusually warm autumn hit Central and Western Europe. For a week now, in many regions of France and Spain, the situation has been reminiscent of summer.

In France, deviations from the norm for the season reached +15 degrees Celsius. For example, the maximum temperature in the southwest of France reached 32 degrees Celsius locallyand minimum temperatures in the same region broke long-term records, recording the minimum value 27 degrees Celsius.

The same record prices for the autumn months also appeared in Spain, where in many parts of the country the thermometers exceeded 30 degrees and pointed to Jerk come on Frontera, in Seville 35.2 degrees Celsius – 10 degrees above normal for the season temperature-. Accordingly, in Germany on Friday 28/10, the maximum daily temperatures up to 28.7 degrees Celsius.

Years of “obsession” with extreme temperatures

OUR Konstantin Laguvar, director of research at the National Observatory in Athens, characterizes these prolonged and unusually high temperatures for the season as “intrusive weather behavior.

As he says: “This is not a continuous situation, but very regular hot episodes of high blood pressure – anticyclone effect it is called- which give these unprecedented temperatures. At the same time, the intrusion of warmer air masses from West Africa moved towards Western and Central Europe. However, seeing 30 degrees Celsius at this time in France is excessive, which is why the French meteorological service described this heat wave as an “exceptional”, “special” case. We, like in the summer, are dealing with ten-year records. In fact, France continues to record record high temperatures since the spring of 2022, approaching the warmest year on record.“.

To the question whether what happened these days in the heart of Europe is connected with changing of the climate, mr Laguvar replies that climate crisis it’s not something that can quantitatively but already an evolving situation, of which this unusual heat attack seems to be a part. In fact, he adds, in our country, a similar obsession with high temperatures characterizes Western Greece during several months of this year, which can also be seen on the map below (in dark red).

The Mediterranean Sea “follows” the high temperatures

As expected, persistently high temperatures in Western and Central Europe in recent months have also affected sea surface temperatures.

According to Mr. Laguvardo, at the beginning of the last month of autumn, the temperature in the Mediterranean varies from 18°С before 26°С. with high positive deviations observed in the Western Mediterranean and mainly in Iberia and Balearic Sea. Deviations are in order +2°С With +4°Сabove normal for the season.

“Last summer in the Mediterranean the temperature was 5 degrees above normal,” says K. mr. Laguvardos, adding that, on the contrary, the sea surface temperature in the Eastern Mediterranean throughout this period was maintained at the level of the norm and slightly below the norm (of the order -1°С With -2°C) mainly in the Aegean and Libyan Seas.

According to an experienced meteorologist, our country, due to its relief with its numerous mountain ranges, sometimes tends to large temperature contrasts between North and West. “These differences are also due to meltemia, which is why the Aegean is cooler. In fact, the following happens: when in the Aegean, Attica and Euboeahot in the west.

Sudden weather changes around the world and heat wave in Greece

However, the unregulated climate situation already described by scientists is evidenced by the fact that while in many parts of Europe the summer is short, on the other side of the Atlantic in many parts of the US winter is knocking at the door, which is unusually early.

A week ago, a strong cold front hit the northern Rocky Mountains and surrounding areas, abruptly interrupting previously warm conditions. And in addition to a sharp cold snap, the first snows appeared. North Jute especially hurt, with maximum temperatures at Salt Lake City will drop from 25 degrees Celsius on October 21 to 7 degrees Celsius two days later. Notably, half a foot more snow fell than the regional average for the month, according to the US National Weather Service.

Such an impressive drop in temperatureexpected according to mr Laguvardo and in still warm Central and Western Europe. As he explains: “Next Thursday and Friday temperatures will drop below normal in many parts of England and France. Switzerland, Austria and northern Italy will also go from hot to extreme cold.”

As for Greece, from today it also receives a “share” of the aforementioned heat. Summer in our country will continue until Friday, when and as everything shows, a system with heavy rains will appear.
